I think Mallard might have been a wild one, or a domestic bird with wild-type color. In any case this plumage looks great.
 
Yes, that dark/rich chestnutty kind of colour is typical of Mallard/Muscovy crosses where the Mallard parent is wild-type in plumage or close to it.

You don't often see the legs on these hybrids, but I note the stoutness and prominent claws (compared to "pure" Mallard-types) as also showing the Muscovy influence. Nicely illustrative example!
