March Moths (2 Viewers)

Against my better judgement (with a clear night ahead) and finding a Dotted Border beneath my security halogen, I ran my UV, only added two more Pale Mottled Willow and Common Quaker, but better than nowt, on a very unpromising evening-

Forecast wasn't great last night with drizzle turning to light rain and temperatures very low, but it was fairly windless so I gave the UV trap a go.

32 Common Quaker, 27 Hebrew Character, 1 Ipsilon Dart Moth, 1 Twin-Spotted Quaker, 1 Small Quaker, 1 Double Striped Pug, 1 Herald Moth, 1 March Tubic, 1 Early Grey, 1 March Moth, and outside the trap 2 European Oak Beauty

best night's mothing I've had for months.

Yellow Horned, Early Grey & a couple of March Moths provided seasoning to this morning's offering of Hebrew Characters and Common & Small Quakers.

This morning at a local west London reserve the traps were more productive than expected as it went down to 3C last night, but fairly clouded.

11 species with:

Brindled Pug
Small Quaker 5
Common Quaker 4
Clouded Drab 3
Oak Beauty
Dotted Chestnut
Diurnea fagella 15
Hebrew Character 2
Chestnut 3
March Moth 4
Early Grey

I was always curious how folks got moths at this time of year! I recall two very disappointing attempts to do so in my childhood, and getting no moths both times. Do you put out heated blankets to lure in the heat-loving critters!? Seeing both the aforementioned "March Moth" and "Oak Beauty" were two childhood dreams, having seen them both in one of the old field guides and thinking how cool it was that anything flew so early. Maybe one day!

I got nothing last night @Tiraya not a thing, the trap was devoid of all life forms, once again very disappointing, we see what others are catching all over the country at this time of year and become seduced into thinking it will be the same for us, optimism takes over I'm sure.

Also...I'm beginning to wonder if the new larger rain guard is having an effect on moths being able to easily access the trap, next time out I'm not going to use it and see what happens.

I don't think temperature is as important as lack of wind and decent cloud cover, but I'm still learning...

Much quieter for me last night - 11 Common Quaker, 5 Hebrew Character, 2 Common Plume, 1 Beautiful Plume,1 Early Grey, and both new for me this year - 1 Clouded Drab and 1 Angle Shades.

It was a little breezy here last night, so could well be one of the contributing factors to me blanking.

Bring on next time.

A few from the week as were all on the wall under the halogen plus a (tonight) lifer!…Yellow Horned!
also Oak Beauty, Hebrew Character,
March Moth, Clouded Drab and Satellite.👍
