Morning vs Afternoon (1 Viewer)

A while ago I had a theory that mornings were best spent birdwatching inland, and afternoons at the waterside, because water birds were less likely to make themselves scarces later in the day. I put this to the test as best I can in Wiltshire, and 16 sessions later I find I was wrong: the water birds behave pretty much as predicted, but at least round Corsham Lake a good deal of what you see is not on the water, but in the surrounding area, and that stuff is lots more visible in the morning. I've put more details on http://www.mcdowella.demon.co.uk/MorningEvening.html if anybody is interested.

Nice exercise mcd. How did you learn your stats. I think dawn is the optimum time. Came home from a night out once in the early hours and decided to try this out. Birdwatching drunk isn't easy

I work as a computer programmer and ages ago I wrote some programs that were statistics-related, but not 'proper' statistical programs. This sparked my curiousity enough that I ended up doing a correspondence course MSc in statistics from Sheffield Hallam University, but I don't have real experience in mainstream statistics, which is one of many reasons why I took up birdwatching. If nothing else I can see science happening from the ground, as a volunteer birdwatcher doing surveys - and get a real appreciation of all the awful things that can have happened to the data before it gets to the statistician! :)
