Hi All

New to the forum

I have Just purchased a Opticron classic if mk ll 75

Would it be worth updating/upgrading the eye piece for better clearer/longer distance viewing.

The eye piece on the scope is 22-47x.

indented use is general bird watching when out and about.

Thanks

Hi Tisssot and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. I've moved your post to the Opticron forum in the Telescopes area as they're better placed to be able to answer your questions.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Welcome to birdforum.

I'm afraid that I have very limited experience of this scope, as it is quite old now. Due to the use of standard glass, a zoom eyepiece would most likely be pushing the very limit of the scope at anything above 30-35x magnification, as well as giving a bit of a "pin-hole" view through an older scope.

The best option to improve the performance of the scope would be to buy a wide angle lens between 20x - 30x, ideally at a low cost (for the sake of the performance of the scope, I'd probably spend less than £100).

Here are a few low cost options that may be worth considering, particularly the last one;
HDF28x
HR2
40930 HR2

Hope this helps!

Hi

I Received the 40930 HR2 this Morning and unfornatley the threads are not compatible with the Classic IF MKll :(

I emailed Opticron to ask if there was an adapter needed.
Could you make any light of the recommend eyepiece's that Opticron have so kindly recommended.

Thanks for your time

Email From Opticron

Thank you for your enquiry. Classic IF MKII spottingscopes with the following pre 1996 inch thread eyepieces;

Classic eyepieces; 18x/22x, 25x/30x, 25x/30xHEP and 18-40x/22-47x.

HR MKI series eyepieces; 40811, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 & 17 offered more magnification options and in some cases higher resolution and longer eye relief.

They are not compatible with HR2, HR3, HDF, HDF T or SDL series eyepieces even if you try to put an eyepiece adapter between them.

Hope this is of help.

Sorry to hear that - my apologies I thought that all opticron eyepieces were compatible with all scopes, but it must just be the newer models.
Out of those listed, I would probably take a look at the 22x, but I am sure @pete_gamby would be able to direct you to the best wide angle lens for your scope.

No apologies needed. Iam just grateful for your help :)

We have stock of the following (magnification on your scope in brackets):

40812 (15x)
40813 (16.5x)

You may find the others on auction sites.

40814 (19x)
40815 (22x)
40816 (30x)
40817 (45x)

The zoom you have is 22-47x.

Cheers, Pete

Sorry, I have to laugh, as I'm looking for a zoom lens for my classic IF-2, so found this page -

It lists several options of zoom, so I sent Opticron an email -

Contact Subject: Help in finding a new lens ?
Message: I have a "Classic IF-2 MT N" scope and am after a zoom lens - can you tell me if there are any that will fit.
I can see from an old webpage that there is a part number of 40406.

and this was their reply -

Thank you for your enquiry. The IF-2 MT was discontinued in 2004 and we longer have the 40406 Classic 22-47x eyepiece available. Maybe you can find a used one online of via a specialist dealer.

The scope is not compatible with any of the current HR, HDF or SDL eyepieces so if you want zoom function plus a more comfortable viewing experience with a brighter, sharper image and wider FOV etc. look at the MM3 60 GA/45 fitted with the 40862 HDF T zoom eyepiece. Product information can be found here: MM3 60 GA/45 Travelscope + HDF T 15-45x Eyepiece | Opticron

Hope that helps.

Best wishes

Garin Baksa, Sales

So if there is anyone out there who has one of these 22-47x zoom eyepiece then please drop me a line as I'd be interested (if the price was right).

Happy spotting.

S.
