Paul's 2023 Photographic World List (3 Viewers)

Now 22nd May completed:-

We spent the morning in Michigan connecting with our main target - Sharp-tailed Grouse - and our Michigan list ended on 113 species before we crossed back into Ontario. Our Ontario list had ticked up to 170 species by the end of the day.

All the best

We started the day around Thessalon with the main priority being Ruffed Grouse. However, we left Thessalon with a heard only and continued our way towards Algonquin. The good news was that the day ended with success on the Cranberry Trail at Callandar Bay Wetland Conservation Reserve after a significant amount of effort. The next day we were heading to Algonquin.

Now 24th May completed:-

This was our first day in Algonquin with targets of Black-backed Woodpecker, Canada Jay, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Spruce Grouse and Northern Saw-whet Owl and we had success with good photos of the first three and a brief sighting of the fourth as we meandered through the expanses of the northern section. Three days left to complete.

My Ontario/Michigan pics now complete. We started at our accommodation near Algonquin & stopped at Carden Alvar on the way to the airport where we recorded around 50 species:-

My trip list was 217 species. eBird suggests that my biggest misses were American Tree Sparrow, Yellow-breasted Chat, Dickcissel & Fox Sparrow, we only heard Northern Saw-whet Owl and of course, we specifically looked for Boreal Chickadee and my only Rusty Blackbird and Connecticut Warbler were rather brief and unsatisfactory. I missed photos of Pileated Woodpecker and Eastern Whip-poor-will.

A good trip. eBird tells me that I had 51 ticks but it was actually less than that as I have a 2004 Florida trip that I am yet to input. That is included in my target actions for this year. The exercise of catching up on the photos has added over 90 species to my photos in eBird which now stands at 1,631 species. My next photography was 5th to 8th June in Morocco.

All the best

Very jealous of the Moltoni's Warbler - missed that on my trip in September!

Chris

A shame about that. Probably easiest to combine with Corsica though the site is a good one on Mallorca if out of the way. Not uploaded my Corsica pics from 2022 to eBird. All part of the project. But I did better pics of my first on Fair Isle. This bird in 2015 was proven on DNA to have originated from the Mediterranean Islands.

All the best

Thanks Paul. Yes, Corsica is kind of floating around in the back of my mind - along with a lot of other destinations!

Chris

Finally cleaned up the intervening period before Peru and can now get going on that interesting challenge.

https://ebird.org/checklist/S141869863 - Yeovil Marsh Warbler twitch

https://ebird.org/checklist/S142676116 - Wareham Forest moth trapping

https://ebird.org/checklist/S150289864 - Hickling Black-winged Kite twitch

https://ebird.org/checklist/S150290290 - Pendeen seawatch

https://ebird.org/checklist/S150290691 - Scillonian shark trip

https://ebird.org/checklist/S150291050 - Scillonian crossing

When I headed to Peru on 15th August, my photo yearlist stood on 918 species. eBird tells me that I have 1,647 species with photos. It will be interesting to review that after the Peru exercise. Be back after say five days' editing.

The last two pics for me are Scopoli's Shearwater on 4th August from the Scillonian crossing. This is not counted as a separate species on eBird so no additional number.

All the best

Paul
