Queens Birds Outside in Winter (1 Viewer)

Hello! We live in queens , NY. Currently , it is about 10 degrees outside and these birds sleep outside our window on a tree every night ! I’m so curious what type of bird this is and how they manage to stay outside in this weather. Thanks !Bird photo

Hi,
You have a flock of Mourning Doves sharing a nap in your tree.
They make a plaintive cooing sound, presumably that is what gave them their name.

Thank you ! Yes my mom said they could be doves - I can’t believe they can sleep in such cold weather ! I hope they’re okay. There are about 50 Of them in this tree it’s incredible

Hi Melissarusso and a warm welcome from all the Staff and Moderators.

Birds that live in colder climates have evolved to cope with the conditions and fluff their feathers up to trap the warm air. Species that live in flocks with also huddle together to help keep themselves warm, often the ones on the outer edge will gradually move into the centre.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

When I asked about this a few years ago, I was told that "mourning" came from the black spots; I understand all the "mourning" birds have them. Dunno if it's true though LOL

Another night with the mourning doves ! Each morning by 6:30 am, they are gone . I still can’t believe they stay warm in this weather ! Thinking of filling our bird feeder up to help them out- something we normally only do in the summer .
