Can anyone tell me , what the earliest you have known or heard about birds nesting in the UK? by this I mean your typical garden bird.
I saw two wood pigeons courting today, and I wondered about blackbirds robins etc do they lay eggs at about the same time every year or does it vary? is say feb to early?

i think woodpigeons and collared doves can breed all year?
but blackbirds near me have already started building nests!

I think Blackbirds will breed throughout the whole year given reasonable weather. Pigeons/Doves are at it whenever they can!

Last Saturday had Mistle Thrush singing and Great Spotted Woodpecker drumming.

Magpies started building a new nest a couple of weeks ago before the cold snap although they seem to have given up now. Female blackbird has followed male around for a couple of weeks, but no "spring-like" activity yet!

Never heard of pigeons and doves nesting all year round, but did notice a woody this am carrying twigs in its beak!

The blackbirds usually start building in late Feb in our garden.

BTW Seb_Seb, where's your patch in sunny Wasall-by-the-Sea?

Hi all,
Ravens breed quite early as well,as do Crossbills(heard a male in song recently),also the Fulmars start courtship quite early.

I watched a female Blackbird today fly onto a fence with a worm, then disappear into some shrubby undergrowth. Not quite sure what she was playing at.
