Using Flash - eye on birds too white (1 Viewer)

Hi guys - I've experimented with my Olympus C740 , using the flash in low light conditions - basically just trying the auto flash settings - and I'm getting the entire Bird eye filling up with bright white light - I only want a hint of light showing on the eye - can anyone please suggest a different setting or is there something I'm doing very wrong.

I look forward to your comments and help - thanks in advance
Nick

I suspect this camera has no flash compensation control. A quick and dirty trick is to tape one or two thicknesses of white paper over the flash head. On my 300D I used to pop a white plastic cup (the water cooler type of cup) over the flash head to diffuse and reduce light output.

Well, I just tried a shot of a Chickadee in the backyard - ( it's VERY overcast today )
and here's the result - I used one little piece of white paper and taped it over the Flash Head - I don't think it came out too bad for my first time - and that's the best I've ever gotten in those light conditions with my Camera - so thanks again mate.
