Big mushroom?

Big mushroom?

There were a large number of these in a field at Fishers Green last Saturday but I wouldn't pick them cos I don't know enough about fungi in gneral to know if they were safe or not. This one was around 8" across though.

Good find, it is most likely a Scaly Tooth, Sarcodon imbricatus. It is edible and supposed to be found under conifers. However, I would advise never to eat wild fungi as there are so many ID variables and you could end up seriously ill, see my pictures today for an example. Whilst ok to pick them in most areas in the UK (you can't in SSSI areas like the Met Police pit nearby), it would would be nice for the next person to come along and admire them on the larger or unusual specimens.
Good photo.
