Bristlecone Pines
Rocky Mountain bristlecone pine (Pinus aristata: Pinaceae) There are two other species of bristlecone pines, Great Basin bristlecone pine (P. longaeva) and the third species known as Foxtail pine (Pinus balfouriana). All three are extremely long lived. The older individuals of Rocky Mountain bristlecone pines at Mount Goliath Nature Area is 700-1,700 yrs old. A living specimen of the Great Basin bristlecone pine is over 4,800 years old found in Utah. This is the oldest tree species known.
Habitat
At the interface of a subalpine zone and timberline at 3,524 m (11,562 ft) elevation. A Rocky Mountain Bristlecone Pine dominated conifer forest with two co-dominants of Subalpine fir and Engelmann Spruce with a subalpine fen.

Mount Goliath Natural Area along Mt. Evans Scenic Byway (hwy 5), south of Idaho Springs, Clear Creek County, Colorado, USA
