Gus,

First let me say that I know it appears that I prefer using a flash, however, I do not. The place neotropic birds are, it forces me to use a flash or extremely high ISO. I shoot with a Canon 580EX Speedlite Flash that meters through the lens (TTL). My camera's maximum synch speed is 1/250 so I opt for this shutter speed on Shutter Priority. A reasonably low ISO for the distances I normally shoot is ISO 200. This combination appears to provide good fill flash with out over whelming the subject. I hope this is of help.

Cheers!
Stanley
