Cape Reed Warbler
These birds are a nightmare to ID. Can somebody please confirm the species. My naming of Marsh Warbler (Acrocephalus palustris) is based on the fact that the wing extends so far back.
Location
Warner Beach, KZN, RSA
Date taken
8-06-2005
Scientific name
Acrocephalus gracilirostris
Equipment used
Canon 20D 70-200mm + 1.4x converter.
Cant help with id but that is a stunning photo. Your focus and colours are excellent, well done.

An excellent shot. In terms of identification as you say noy easy. I believe that you are dealing with either one of the Marsh warblers, African or European, or Cape Reed Warbler. Given that the shot was taken in June and that the European Marsh warblers, which have pale pinkish legs, depart in March indicates African of the 2 Marsh Warblers.

Now to comapre African Marsh and Cape Reed Warbler. Based on the white eyebrow, dark legs and heavish bill I would go with Cape Reed Warbler, but I would not bet my life on it.

I agree with Gordon. This bird is NOT a Marsh warbler. In June the Marsh Warblers are found in Europe. The (European) Marsh Warbler is more uniform brown and has pale pinkish legs. So it could be an African Marsh or a Cape Reed Warbler.

Another excellent photo Rudy. These are my favourite little birds.

African Marsh has a very short wing length, so judging by the date, eyestripe and wing length i would go with Cape Reed Warbler.
