Nothing to do with hippopotam[insert appropriate plural ending].
These Teal just seem to be sucking up the wet mud.
More or less an overhead view from the Holden Tower.

Think you should give them some snorkels... looks like you have had some rain. Good shot Alan, I really like the lighting on this one. Also, the feather detail is outstanding. When looking at the male especially you can make out each and every line in the plumage. The green iridescence on the female also comes through very well. How close were you when you took this shot? It looks from the detail that you were almost on top of them, but I know that Teals wouldn't tolerate that... at least the ones around my house wouldn't. It is also interesting to look at these Green Teals anyhow because the American version doesn't have that horizontal white stripe but a vertical one a little more to the front of the birds breast. Anyway, it is a fascinating pair you have found here! Thanks for sharing! :t:
