I finally caught him in the act (Corvus corone)

A bit of a long read, but worth it if bird behaviour interests you.

I uploaded a pic of a nervous juvenile Crow earlier in the year (he landed clumsily in a bush), and he continues to visit with his parents. He's still really nervous, and spooks at just a glimpse of me at the window.

As you'll know from my pics, I've been hanging strings of Monkey Nuts in the garden for years... mostly for the Jays. Recently, the complete string of nuts tied to this pole have been vanishing; not eaten or chewed, but no string or nuts left. In fact no sign the string was ever there... so not bitten off or chewed. I found out a while ago that it was the juvenile Crow taking the string of nuts, but I didn't know for sure how he was doing it. This morning I finally found out; he undoes the knot and flies off with the lot ;)

Love it Chris!!!! What a clever lad he is, isn't he.

Now... are you going to try and fool him with a different knot?

A super picture - thanks for the laugh mate.

I've tried all the knots I know (I am/was an Angler, so I know a few), Delia... apart from the ones I won't be able to undo myself ;)

Brilliant observation ... worth publishing, Chris ... great birds ... I'm sure, with some effort they can android apps ...

Where is he taking them all, if you put the next nut string with a very, very long piece of string, tie it to your door handle and then follow him holding the other end. Just a thought.

You should wrap the string a few times around the pole for a good show from now on.
Intelligent bird and capture.
