Thanks Max. I think some of the softness comes from a subtle curve in post to bring the shadows up slightly. Always the big question: leave entirely as shot (but that depends on the film type or camera settings on digital, so really what is 'natural'?) or make the image look good and as close to reality as possible. I only ever optimise / subtly enhance to match my impression at the scene, never change or manipulate an image.
