Lesser Swamp Warbler
Sometimes called "Cape Reed Warbler" members of the genus "Acrocephalus" are notoriously tricky to identify. We originally misidentified this bird as a Greater Swamp Warbler but I sent the photos to various experts who were unanimous in their opinions that it was a Lesser. Greater has a rather different shape with a much longer tail and lacks the rufous patches on the flanks. I believe this is "A. g. cunenensis" which is smaller than nominate and paler below with whitish extending to the belly. Another candidate is Common (African) Reed Warbler which has a shorter, less curved bill and a less pointed wing tip formula. The tail seems short because of wear. Corrections always welcome.
