Pied puffbird (Bucco tectus)

First posting - I actually found this site while trying to identify this bird!
Habitat
wetland
Location
Rio Pocosol, Costa Rica
Date taken
19/09/05
Scientific name
Bucco tectus
Equipment used
Sony DSC-P92, 30mm 1.7X telephoto conversion lens
Jules,
Nice photo. Race subtectus of Notharchus tectus (only occasionally put in genus Bucco). It must be undergoing a range expansion as generally thought to range in CR only in the northeast Caribbean side.

Katy,
More or less. It gots its' name from the habit of puffing out its' feathers and bringing its' neck as close to the body as possible, assuming a kind of ball-like conformation. Apparently to escape unnoticed to predators while it actively scans the surroundings for its own prey.

Great photo! A new bird for the BF database.
