Rarotonga Monarch (Pomarea dimidiata)

Not many people have seen this bird. The Rarotonga Monarch or Kakerori was thought to be extinct untill in 1980 people discovered 20 birds on Rarotonga (Cook Isls.).
Thanks to a succesfull recovery plan there are about 250 birds.

This lady is a real beauty, what nice cinnamon colour she has! Nice to hear about the recovery of this bird. Excellent portrait! :t:

That is a lovely bird and an equally great shot, thanks for posting, well captured!

Dear Jack, That is the bird I have been dreaming to see. I am actually planning to see it in Cook Island, hopefully this year. Somemore this is a stunning young adult in rich rufous color. Please share with us more of your photos.

the birds take four years to reach adult plumage, these are the grey birds that "Pratt" and HBW call males and is shown in your other excellent photo of this species. The bird here is a bird of the previous year (or possibly in it's 2nd year) as it has orange at the base of the lower mandible. As far as I know it is not possible to sex the birds in the field.

Thanks Marcus on these useful indications, have both the Pratt, and the HBW. Will make note in the Pratt - but, sure don't feel like marking up the HBW;)

Great piece of information. Great shot. Will place in "my favorites" :t:
