Red-tailed hawk with prey (pigeon?)

Red-tailed hawk with prey (pigeon?) (Buteo jamaicensis)

In the next photo you can see the tail more, but it looks like a red-tail hawk. This is the guy who was down in the grass that the white-tailed kite was attacking. It looks like he got a rock pigeon, but I'm not positive on who the unlucky fellow is.

Nikon d5, 500/5.6e shot at 1/2000, f/5.6, ISO 500 cropped to 6.7 MP (1.8x, 900mm equivalent). This was on full manual settings -- I had set the ISO to not blow out the high-lights. The shadows are boosted probably +2 EV or more in Photoshop. I was on the wrong side, so the birds are backlit. The blue tint on the pigeon and hawk wings is because it was deep shadow.

Crikey!!! That's amazing action you've captured (the poor pigeon though!)

A fantastic picture you've taken of your hunting hawk Marc - very well done lad.

That should keep the Hawk busy for awhile.

A beautifully detailed and colorful behavior moment Marc!
