Looking Like a Nice Guy (Lanius ludovicianus)

Loggerhead Shrikes have occasionally been called butcher birds due to a habit of impaling their victims on mesquite thorns and, if available, barbwire. This one looked so cute as he perched nice and high in the tree, but I could see his eyes taking in the area looking for his next victim.
Habitat
Found throughout much of the United States, found in semi-open country with lookout posts; wires, trees and scrub.
Location
Whitewater Draw, Sulfur Springs Valley, Arizona
Date taken
February 13, 2010
Scientific name
Lanius ludovicianus
Equipment used
Canon 1D Mark III, 100-400 lens
WOW!!! o:) This is a gorgeous picture of your cute (indeed) Shrike, Lisa, with right the background I like the best, smudged but still showing a hint of what's there behind (makes the picture more interesting)!!! A sensational habitat shot to my eyes, girl!!!

Lovely to see you around again, btw... it's quite a long time since we saw the last of your Arizonian pics! ;) Cheers, Lisa!

Superb capture of tis super bird. Great colours and composition. Great post.

Wonderful image,Lisa :t::t::t: This shrike stands out beautifully against a sumptuous backdrop :clap:

Always good to see an image from you Lisa, and a beauty it is too, great birds. When I was a lad (A long time ago) Red-backed Shrikes used to breed where I lived at that time, and they were also known as Butcher birds for the same reasons you have given. Alas, theres not a sight of one around there now, and they've turned into a quite rare species throughout the whole country.
