This massive 10ft diameter, ancient River Red Gum in the shallow sometimes creek of this remnant patch of Grassy Box Gum Woodland had seen a storm or two during its few hundred year lifetime ..... oooo yes ..... :)
It seems the woodlands manage to hang on just long enough for the next big drink and flooding renewal. Dormant life would spring into action and the place would absolutely come alive with all sorts of irregular visitors like Buff-banded Rails, Royal Spoon bills, and Pacific Herons, and the enigmatic Rakali.
All the local birds would make whoopee - knocking out as many chicks as possible - some in back to back broods .... forbs and flowers dormant or hanging on for dear life between the tufts of Kangaroo Grass, or in depressions in the dry creek bed would awaken and flourish.
There is something rather magical about watching the changing of the light, and the cycles of the seasons .... :)
