Western Blue Flag (Iris missouriensis)

Western Blue Flag (Iris missouriensis)

Ranging widely throughout the Western US; note the nectar guides (yellow stripes) encouraging pollinators to visit. Similar to Hartweg's Iris (I. harwgii), Blue Flag tends to grow at higher elevations in wet meadows, while Hartweg's grows in dry areas. Hartweg's usually has yellowish flowers and is apparently unrecorded here in Mono County.

What a beautiful colour this flower is Joe. That's a great low-level angle you've taken this picture from too.

Many thanks for showing it to us my friend.

It's interesting that there's a large common yellow iris that grows on the west of Scotland that's called a Flag Iris there - here's a picture I took of some Flags (Wild Flag Iris); the scientific name is Iris pseudacorus. It grows in marshy land, in brackish areas and also along the edges of fresh water lochs.
