Hi there

While in Spain in May this year I came across this book for sale locally to where we where staying

It is called 'The Birds of Menorca' by Enric Ramos

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Birds-Menorca-Enric-Ramos/dp/8427307616

We bought it for 15 Euros only. It appears to be a bit of a collectors item - and some of the prices that people want for this book alone, is an eye opener to me.

Love to know about this author? What do people thing of this birder?

I bought a copy of that book in Cala Galdana for 1800 pesetas (about 7 quid) in 1996 or 97.

I found it handy during my summer visits to Menorca between then and the last time I was there in 2005. It does illustrate, however that Menorca is probably underwatched and many things must go unrecorded. I was surprised to see, for instance that Rock Sparrow had been recorded only 5 times on the island, including a group singing at Algendar in 1974, but no recent records.

It does conclude however that "In Majorca a few small colonies are known which makes us think that it mighth pass Minorca unnoticed".

The reason I pick out this example is that I saw my very first rock sparrow, head pattern, yellow throat, the lot, at a distance of only about ten feet on Menorca at Cala Mitjana on my very first visit to the island in July 1995. (Never seen one there since, though, so the book's not altogether wrong).

Lol! So did we 8-P

1800 pesetas still marked on it. First edition copy as well - 1996 in pristine condition! £30 on Amazon - might dig it out and put it up for sale though!!! ;)

Actually it's a very good guide to birds of the island listing species by species their breeding status and when and where to see them with some first rate photos as well.
