Cetaceans in North East England (1 Viewer)

I'm coming up for some of these Minkes on Saturday. What's the best place at Filey to look from, and is there a particular patch of sea to look at?

Also are there any cetacean watching trips on Saturday or Sunday with a reasonable chance of success?

John

At Filey from the end of Carr Naze you need to look N/NE, spent an hour there last night and had 4 sightings

There are possible trips out of Whitby on Sat and Sun http://www.dolphinspotter.co.uk/

This report was on the Teesmouth Bird Club website on 9 July:
"I have been fortunate to be on a DFDS ORCA survey today.0700am 10 mile off Hartlepool, 6 White beaked dolphin and a feeding Minke whale. Off Whitburn 8 White sided dolphin and a Risso`s Dolphin. Plenty of sand eels. brian clasper "

I've seen no other mention of White-sided Dolphins locally and wondered about a typo. Would be great if there was a pod of there, but getting convincing views from land would be difficult.

Mark

See todays Teesmouth Bird Club Forum, Brian Clasper said it was an error in his report, he's an honest guy.

Filey Minkes showing very close to the Naze this evening allowing for naked eye views. Five WBDs were also reported earlier although I don't have any details.

Apparently up to 9 Minkes were estimated to be feeding north of Filey Brigg this morning. Makes we wonder what else will turn up over the next few days!

I'm booked ex-Whitby 0730 Sunday but will come up during tomorrow to watch off Filey. Thanks for the tip re Harbour Porpoises, Mike, I might have a crack at them too as I only have very distant pix of the blighters.

John

White sided dolphins

I was at Filey all day yesterday, and the five dolphins were moving South and then North for about 20 minutes, when finally moving South. Although they were a long way out with the equipment we were using, were definitely white-sided as the ochre patches were visible.

Spent a couple of hours at Filey Saturday morning, connecting with around 4 or 5 Minkies. Hard to be sure how many were out there, so difficult to count. Nice meeting birdieboy123 and good to meet Farnboro John again. Sorry I had to run off so quickly after realising I hadn't paid for the parking! Got away with it though.

a couple of hours at Hartlepool this morning paid off with first a couple of Harbour Porpoise, then fantastic views of three White Beaked Dolphin, the first time I have seen any on my local patch!

Cheers
Martyn

At least 6 minkes and a probable Bottlenosed dolphin from Filey Brigg tonight although the animals were all north, off Scarborough

White-beaked Dolphins off Cresswell/Lynemouth on Wednesday evening from the shore, then again on Thursday evening from the shore...then again, during our Friday evening North Sea pelagic B :) Still got a few spaces on some of our other pelagics this year - always great fun and very sociable, if you're fortunate enough to get decent shots of whale/dolphin dorsal fins you have the chance to get involved in the only pelagic research project in the North East to be actively involved in the Marine Conservation Zones project, and the seabirds and cetaceans are a delicious icing on the cake :)

A request to anyone posting sightings on this thread - if you could submit your sightings online through the 'submit a sighting' page on the North East Cetacean Project website, that would be much appreciated B :) Any cetacean records from the Thames to the Scottish Border would be great :t:

cheers

Quick silly question - where's the watchpoint at Whitburn? I'm planning to give it a crack in the morning on the off-chance of some White-beaked Dolphins.

Or would locals recommend anywhere else as a better bet?

Cheers

John

Had at least 15+ White beaked Dolphins off Whitburn this morning from 11.20am to 12.00pm. The group moved slowly north towards Tynemouth and there appeared to be feeding as the group changed directions on a number of times.
If this is any help John, I viewed from the coast path, below the lighthouse as there quite a few benches in this area to view the sea!
Hope this helps?
Cheers,
Dave.
