Mini write up: Microscope eyecups for leatherette Habicht models. (1 Viewer)

Hello all,

I own a pair of leatherette Habichts and like every other leatherette Habicht owner knows, the stock eyecups are terrible. They are not big enough and the binoculars become floaters, which wrecks the experience. Many retrofit GA eyecups, but I do not like the aesthetic, so I wanted a different solution. I saw others using microscope eyecups and decided to go that route.

Now that I also own GAs, I can say the microscope eyecups are more comfortable and even preferable! While I am not the first to do this, I wanted to do a quick write-up to encourage others. If you own leatherette Habichts, I highly recommend doing this. It transforms the experience.

Here is the eBay link to the eye cups I purchased (no affiliation). I am also including a screenshot of the dimensions for when the link eventually goes inactive.

The microscope eyecups are a friction fit over the original eyecups. They fit snugly, allowing you to adjust where you would like them to vertically sit. I do find they slide down over time with use, so I occasionally pull them 1-2mm back up. However, this is infrequent.

Before fitting them, you will need to carefully remove an extra inner ring designed for the microscope mount. For this you will need a very sharp, fine tipped knife (such as a scalpel). Then you can carefully put them on.

Note: If your current eyecups have accumulated oils (from your face and hands), it is a good idea to first clean everything with isopropyl alcohol or windex. A soft lint free cloth such as cotton or microfiber works best, rather than paper towel which would leave behind paper fibre furries. This will ensure a nice grippy interface between the new and original eyecups, so they wont slide as much.

That is it! It really transforms the Habichts. I hope this helps others.

Happy viewing,
Nick.

Thanks! I just ordered them at Ebay.
I already extended the length of my eyecups a bit by adding an o-ring before screwing the eyecups on. But the eyecups are still a bit too small and shortisch for my liking.

I love those green 8x30's actually! Too bad they are not for sale anymore.

Ps. how are you focusers doing on your Habicht's? Do they loosen up after a while?

I will be interested to hear what you think of the eyecups once installed.

As for the focus stiffness, with my brand new leatherette pair I spent some time working it back and forth whilst watching a movie with my wife. It helped a lot. It's now better than my 1999 version. Its still on the stiff side, but it's much better than it was.

Thanks for the information and excellent photos. The eBay ad suggests that the eyecups fit any binocular, so I’m going to try them out on my Swaro EL 8x32, given the low price. Thanks again.

I will let you know. I will receive them in january.
Which rainguard do you now use, with the newly acquired eyecups?

I don’t use a rain guard with my leatherette version. I like them without any strap or encumbrances for use at my house (I live in the woods, with lots of wildlife around).

I specifically got the GA version to use when out and about.

All that said, the factory rain guard should work just fine with them.

I’m not sure they would work with the EL 8x32’s.

Just guessing, but I would think the eyecup on the EL’s is larger and they might not fit.

I received the eyecups and I think I like them.
I didn't cut away the inner ring. I turned the original eyecups off, I put the new ones on and I screwed the eyecups on those inner rings. This way the new eyecups are fixed and can't move that easily. The original eyecups are 1mm longer. You can see the original eyecups and the new eyecups have the same level.
I don't know if I leave it this way. I can always cut off this inner ring. I must confess it would be more comfortable if the eyecups are another 1mm longer.

The original rainguard does fit, but really tight and you have to fold the binoculars a bit further to let it fit.

Thanks for sharing.

Your trick of screwing on the eyecups might work well for someone who doesnt need much more eye relief, but wants something more comfortable.
