Just saying hello and a question about Buzzards

Hi Jo , welcome to the forum! Where I live , crows mobbing Buzzards are common. It's quite a spectacle ,and you sometimes hear the Buzzards doing their cat like 'mewing' call. Happy birding! :)

Accipiter, but which? (Photos iffy) SW UK

It's Male Sparrowhawk. You can tell by the orangey colour to the cheek on the second picture , a characteristic that male Sparrowhawks posses. Also , it doesn't seem as bulky and stocky as a Goshawk would be. Nice spot , LowellMills :)

Survey on pinioning at WWT centres

I know this is a very old post , but I would advise bird-lovers to research the pinioning that WWT and other zoos take part in and how CAPS are valiantly trying to stop it , as well as taking the survey , as it is an important debate that is often ignored.

Is all this bird ringing necessary?

I don't agree with it either , Pratincol. I think the neck collars are used for birders or ornithologists being able to read in the field. It must make preening much harder for the bird , but what worries me most is the process of it being put on. Surely , the ringers would have to pin down the...

Is all this bird ringing necessary?

Thanks Qingcol. As the post before said , ringing concentrates on a bulk of birds , rather than just an individual. The main scheme today is monitoring bird populations. Ringing gives us the information on how many birds leave the nest and survive to become adults , as well as telling us how...

Birds of prey in Greater Manchester

Hi Kestrel , welcome to the forum! According to a list I found of birds in Greater Manchester that follows the British Ornithologist's Union guidelines , Eurasian Sparrowhawk and Common Kestrels are common , so they would have nests. As mentioned earlier , super fast Peregrine Falcons nest in...

Is all this bird ringing necessary?

I'm concerned with animals rights (I am a vegetarian , aiming to be a vegan , against animal testing , against wing pinioning...) but I'm fine with bird ringing , as long as it is done correctly , and the ringer has the birds welfare as top priority. Bird ringing is done for the benefit of the...

    Is Bird Ringing/Banding Cruel?

Thanks for all the comments! I have visited my local ringing group many times since I started this thread , and I have seen how skilled the ringer are and how much they care for the birds. They said it is rare for birds to die , and it normally Sparrowhawks catching the birds in the net , but it...

    Somerset Birding

I know it is a while ago , but on the 30th of July , I went bird watching at sunrise at Ham Wall. I had a fantastic morning , it was an example of the diversity of bird life Somerset has to offer. What I saw ... 1 x Green Woodpecker 1 x Common Kestrel 6 x Eurasian Hobby 1 x Cetti's Warbler 5 x...

Birds of prey to deter pigeons

I'm not sure about the effects of falconry deterring pigeons , but I have seen people in my area using bird shaped pigeon scares for the problem. They are shaped like raptors and are attached to string , which you tie high up and the wind blows the bird around to look like it is moving in a...

    "The Lanner falcon"

I'm not sure about Lanner's , but I went birding in Zante in May and saw 3 Levant Sparrowhawks. Hope you spot them both |=)|

    Juvinile Goshawk With Adult Markings

The other thing it could be is a brown adult Northern Goshawk , can Goshawks be variable in colour?
