    Sumatra March 2014

Great trip report Jan, and congrats on bagging all the endemics. We're going in June. Do you by any chance have the specific locations for the Graceful Pitta stakeouts and the Peacock-Pheasant site on the Tapan Road?

    Ptarmigan? Dotterel?

As Rob says, tops of the Northern Pennines could be worth a speculative try Alan, could be late passage and no-one really knows how many breed up there. Worth being careful wherever you go as its likely to be a sensitive time of year for the birds.

    Dales harriers let down

The time has certianly come now for a rethink with regards conservation strategy for these fantastic birds. The only way to really minimise persecution is wardening known sites 24/7 but for this a wider pool of volunteers is needed than those in the know or their mates as is currently the...

    Yorkshire Birding

Merlins back on the tops and active in the Dales now, first Wheatear up Wharfedale a few days back and a juvenille Crossbill on the Cumbrian border.

    Ruddy Duck Cull

Agreed Dave. Wh deserves conserving regardless but its interesting with regards taxonomy. The impact of the Ruddy is perhaps a bit surprising given the differences in appearance between the two and my assumption (based on nothing particular!) that they had been seperated from each other for some...

    Ruddy Duck Cull

Not that bad a debate folks. If a case is strong enough it wins the day surely? Pro cull have done a good job highlighting weaknesses of anti-cull side IMHO. Be more worrying though if those in 'authority' were allowed to get on with it without the questions being asked, wouldn't it? Slightly...

    Can someone explain why......

Only two recs looking it up, both last November. Suppose Shetland isn't as well watched November time though, maybe this is a factor?

    Can someone explain why......

I think I remember Hume's has been seen less on the northern isles than would be expected.

    We have it so easy.

If you think the magics gone out of twitching, then don't twitch, concentrate on finding your own rares. Or if its really bugging you that its too easy then get rid of the pager, cancel the Birdguides subscription, don't ring the hotlines and just write a few letters every now and again to...

    Slimbridge

Hide clamp I reckon. Spoonbill was on South Lake when I saw it last week. If the geese are as far out as they were then, picking up a Bean would be a no hoper so that might be tough. South Finger is pretty quiet if you want to escape the crowds, not sure how good it is in winter though. Nearby...
