    driving and birding= bad driving

I surveyed for golden plover using my car as a bird hide. Stopping in gateways to look into the fields, if they weren't there I'd just move on. When I did eventually find them they weren't at all bothered until I got out of the car and set up my scope to count them, they then moved away...

Does anyone know where I would find information regarding the migration direction of waders and shelduck to and from the Severn Estuary, especially around Bridgwater bay?

    Gull identification in the UK

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I went onto the website suggested and to be honest was a bit overwhelmed. I'm an ecologist bird surveyor who has to be able to id everything i see, literally. For example the different gull species seen in a large flock of 1000+ strong flying over a rubbish...

Yes, Ive seen the Macmillan ones and also the ones on Amazon, but there over £40 and thats a bit expensive for me at the moment. What would be ideal is if someone knows of a layout a bit like the FSC field guides, with the good comparison pictures?

    Gull identification in the UK

Can anyone recommend any id guides that will help me with gulls seen in the UK? I need quite an easy simple guide that isn't full of detailed information, preferably with good pictures?

    hobby watching?

I'll be looking over a very specific area that consists of woodland and opne fields. There has been a known nest in a specific tree and I'm looking for potential nesting and territory within that area. The hobbys haven't been seen yet this year and I've got to go and find them. I'd like to know...

    hobby watching?

Whats the best way of finding hobbys? Is there a good time of day or weather that is best and what kind of thing should you be looking for if trying to see a hobby, or deciding if they are holding a territory?

    What does 'flyaway population mean?

Thanks ever so much for that. I can now write my report knowing what I'm talking about. I'll inform our resident 'expert', who didn't know what it meant either (perhaps not so much of a expert as I first thought!) Your a star!!

    What does 'flyaway population mean?

Why does the east Atlantic migration have this special name? Does it refer to the actual movement or the destination? and is it used for other species?
