Munich South, Germany: Common or Arctic Redpoll?

Hi all, I was wondering about a very light redpoll that I saw today in a flock of about 50 common redpolls. Any chance this could be an arctic redpoll? It is the one on the left and the one in the middle on the 1st and 2nd pic, respectively. Unfortunately I do not have any pics of the bird's...

    Kuwait City - glossy starling

Thanks! Greater blue-eared then, I guess. Pity, we can't count them for the list. ;)

    Kuwait City - glossy starling

Hi all, in Kuwait City we saw two birds yesterday in the city which looked a lot like glossy starlings (blue shiny plumage) and foraged together with common mynas on grass. Size similar as the common mynas. I have been trying to find out which kind of species exactly it is, but none of the...

Thanks, that's also what I concluded in the end, but only for lack of better alternatives. :) Thanks again and have a great evening! /Claudia

Today, June 16, 2022: Gotland, Sweden, Aijkesträsk on Fårö

Hi all, We saw this female duck today with some ducklings on Fårö, Ajkesträsk, Gotland, Sweden. We are wondering what it is, we have an idea but nothing is fully in agreement with our bird guide. Thanks, Claudia

Strange duck (?) - Ammersee, Bavaria, Germany

Thanks, I just saw in my handbook of birds of North America that it very much looks like a fulvous whistling duck!

Strange duck (?) - Ammersee, Bavaria, Germany

Hi all, here a few, admitted, pretty lousy pictures of a duck that we saw today at the south part of Ammer Lake, Bavaria, Germany. It swam in the Ammer river together with a male mallard (which usually gives vibrations of zoo duck pond escapee or strange breed duck..?). Any help would be much...

Grey Plover or American Golden Plover in Mallorca

Thanks for the informative answer! I guess the blurriness of the pic led me into the wrong direction, I can see that now. I had read that beak size with dunlins can vary a lot, but probably not that much then ;)

Grey Plover or American Golden Plover in Mallorca

I would suggest the following IDs: 1. Dunlin (overall colorless impression, black feet, but an indication of the bird's size would help me here) 2.-4. grey plovers However, waders in winter plumage are not my area of expertise really, so I am curious what others will say. Cheers, Claudia

Jan 6, 2022: Starnberger See, Upper Bavaria, Germany - Velvet scoter (Samtente/Melanitta fusca) or Common scoter (Trauerente/Melanitta nigra)

Dear all, Today from far away I could observe the attached couple of birds in the Northern part of Starnberger See (Upper Bavaria, South Germany). When I was there I was almost convinced that they were common scoters, as, with the scope, I did not see any white patch in the plumage, the orange...

    Thanks Andrew, very much appreciated!

Munich Germany: Water pipit with orange-yellow legs?

Hello Alex, Thanks! The pictures from my second post may not be the same bird. There were in total seven pipits and it was hard for me to keep track of the individuals. I have two other pics of the 4846 bird which are not completely blurred - I attach the originals, unprocessed. Many thanks...

Munich Germany: Water pipit with orange-yellow legs?

Thanks! Yes I agree with you. Just thought they would be gone by now, but I now read that some actually spend the winter in Germany. What I heard sounded more like water pipit, though. Anyway, I saw up to 7 birds, so maybe a mix. I attach another two other pics which may underline meadow pipit...

Munich Germany: Water pipit with orange-yellow legs?

Hi all, I would be grateful for some feedback on this pipit. The picture was taken at the shores of Isar, south of Munich. The bird was quite far away and the light conditions not favourable, hence the lousy pic, sorry about that. Actually I was convinced it would be a water pipit (Anthus...
