    Common or Barrow's female Goldeneye

Thanks guys. That was quick! Like I said I assumed it was Common. I know how rare they are here. But it just looked so dark headed rather than brown, and it lacked the sort of white collar that my books show on the Common female. Cheers.

    Common or Barrow's female Goldeneye

Saw this yesterday (Sat 17th January) at RSPB Conwy. Immediately thought it was a female goldeneye. Today I've got home and looked it up and now I'm confused. Can anyone confirm that this is indeed a female goldeneye, or is it a female Barrow's?? Sorry about the quality of the photo, this is a...

    Med Gull

This is the first Med Gull I have seen and I was amazed by how black its head looked next to the ubiquitous Black-Headed Gulls.

    Osprey close-up

Wow! Stunning photo. You obviously have excellent techniques and a lens like a Sherman tank gun! Beautiful photograph. Well done, Dave
  5. Poplar Hawk-Moth

    Poplar Hawk-Moth

There were two of these little beauties about six inches apart on this hazel bush. Both appeared quite happy to be photographed.

First night with the Bat Detector

Here is a photo of the bat that I took last Sunday. Whilst I have been resizing it I have remembered that this was a noctule, the largest indigenous bat to the UK, and not a pipistrelle (which I didn't get a photo of). The quality is questionable but they are so small and quick it was...

First night with the Bat Detector

Hello Scott, Funny you should mention Bat Detectors. Until last Sunday evening I didn't have a clue as to what one was! However, that was until I attended a talk organised by the local park warden, John, about bats. It was given by a facinating women called Sally Gillies (I think?). Great...

Comment by 'Dave Sherry' in media 'I am looking at you'

I noticed the eye as soon as this picture downloaded. I will certainly have a closer look at the woodies in my area. If any have 'odd' eyes, like the one above, I will let you know. Isn't it wonderful how the most ordinary birds look fantastic close up. There is always something new to see...

Caterpillar on a reed - ID??

Well Harry, Looks like you were absolutely right. I found this photo on a site for UK Moths. Great site (not sure how to enter a link but try this) http://www.ukmoths.force9.co.uk/ Thanks again.

Caterpillar on a reed - ID??

Cheers Harry, The reed it is on is a normal sized reed. I would say that the caterpillar was about 1.5 inches long. There was one other that I spotted about twenty yards away that was about the same size, certainly no significant size difference. Thanks again, I am now going to go off and...

Caterpillar on a reed - ID??

Hello, I wonder if anyone out there can assist me with an ID for this little beauty? It was on a reed a few days ago in the reed beds at Leighton Moss RSPB, Lancashire (hope that helps). Cheers, Dave.

    Grasmere Lake, Grasmere Village, Cumbria

I was up at Grasmere yesterday and saw two grey wagtails and a dipper on the river that runs between Grasmere and Rydal. They did seem very bright for greys but the markings on the head and the greyness of the back as opposed to the greenish tinge clinched it for me. Dave

    Spot the bird

A bee hummingbird, just behind the trunk of the olive tree on the far right??

    Sand Martins in Preston.

I am relatively new to this game and so my experience is rather limited but for my sins Preston is my haunt. My local patch is Haslam Park, Ashton, but I get to the docks by the Ribble Bullnose, Freckleton Marsh, Church Deeps upto Halfpenny bridge. Mostly on the Ribble as you can see, but I...
