Dn many people keep a county year list?

Some keep a Cornwall year list, I expect the best is over 250. I never have because I wanted to avoid the temptation to drive 2 hours just to year-tick Egyptian goose (somebody did this!). I wonder how far into the journey home the warm after-glow of that tick lasted. I limit my yearlist to my...

January 1st joint Birdforum list (2023 edition)

It's a bit hard to cross-ref but don't think you've got the following, all of which I saw around Lizard: Manx Shearwater Storm Petrel Chough Guillemot Razorbill

European Summer Migrants Wintering in Europe

Interesting. We already get occasional overwintering turtle doves in Cornwall. There's also someone locally who's bred and released them for years, under licence, with some idle speculation that maybe it's his birds that are overwintering.

Scottish Crossbill - Yes? No? Never?

    Do it!

Scottish Crossbill - Yes? No? Never?

Behave. I don't have that many ticks on my list that I can afford to lump all these. How is it that whenever they rejig the classification they lump the ones I've seen and split the ones I haven't?

Scottish Crossbill - Yes? No? Never?

Thanks for this Paul, was indeed helpful. So, if I've understood it correctly (slim chance), 'Scottish' Crossbill is a good ESU but not strictly distinct under the various definitions of species, not even if you chase them with a pot to gather up poop. And to answer my own question from my...

Scottish Crossbill - Yes? No? Never?

Another question, sorry I really haven't been paying attention, what's the status of parrot crossbill in the UK? Are the 'scottish' crossbills in the Caledonian forest back in the 1980s now thought to have been parrots? just not on the official list 😉

Scottish Crossbill - Yes? No? Never?

What's the current consensus on Scottish Crossbill? Does it exist? Did it ever exist? Were they just parrot crossbills all along? I remember these points were being debated some years ago but not whether everyone reached agreement. I've tried checking the official British list online, it...

    UKLeps and moth eggs

Anyone know what has happened to the (previously) excellent UKLeps website? Every link just brings up the message "403 Forbidden" for me now. This used to be the best resource for photos of non-adult stages of UK moths. In its absence, can anyone suggest another site with photos of moth eggs...

    Never Mind the Wind Farms

Cross-Channel 'flying ferries' concept revealed for Portsmouth route What could be more hazardous to seabirds than giant propellers stood in the sea? How about ones skimming metres above the sea at 180mph! Coming to a ferry route near you by 2025, apparently, is the flying ferry. Passenger...

    NHBS Moth trap

    |:d| Me too. If that's a blacklight bulb it could do with something like a white nylon cover over it in my experience. I find the bare bulbs don't do much except hurt your eyes, but inside something that fluoresces they work a treat.

    A well-marked Rustic sp

I think six striped will be over now and heath maybe not yet started for us. Saying that, I've not run the trap much lately.
