Changes in how Ebird treats non-natives

At least European Goldfinch in Wisconsin actually show up in species maps on ebird. That’s not the case in other places. re: Red-masked parakeet in San Francisco These birds have been aroind for decades and they still aren’t on the state’s checklist? Talk about stubborn.

The story of the Steller's Sea-Eagle that ended up in Massachusetts...where has it been over the past 16 months?

The most recent sighting was Jan 2 in Georgetown, Maine. The best way to track sightings is probably the Ebird ABA Raritiesemail alert. (Because it’s a code 4.) Also, Maine Audubon have set up an app to assist birders looking for it. Instructions on their blog...

Changes in how Ebird treats non-natives

I’ve had similar experiences with ebird reviewers. Some of them use their own personal biases on what they suppress, and sometimes it even comes down to which ebirder submitted the data (sometimes it does get cliquey). Being an ebird reviewer is an enormous, time-consuming task. I appreciate...

    Birding apps?

I believe the updated Audubon app includes these features. I don’t use that app anymore, as it now takes up too much space on my phone. I liked having it as a second field guide app, but the new features make it a storage space hog.

    Rare bird?

Nothing wrong with that. I got extremely excited the first time I saw one, and still get excited when I travel west and am able to see them again.Beautiful birds (and very noisy, too!).

I fear I have created a monster, help please.

I’m pretty sure American Goldfinch breeding season comes later in the summer. Their breeding season in timed to coincide with thistle seeds ripening on the plants, which occurs in July and August in this zone.

    Managing your lists

Ebird does “offer” the ability to enter subspecies. Example checklist https://ebird.org/checklist/S66612645 It also allows you to look up sightings by subspecies. See this screenshot of Song Sparrow subspecies (using the species map tool).

    ABA Big Year 2019

Is Nicole's friend Amanda Damin doing a Big Year too? She was in Miami last week for LaSagra's flycatcher, western spindalis, and thick-billed vireo. Yesterday she picked up the garganey in Sacramento, CA.

    ABA Big Year 2018

Thank you for the spreadsheets, Joe. John W's blog entries for his 2019 photo big year have been understandably sporadic. His latest indicates his numbers (rarities chasing) are lower than expected, due to some early and recent travel hiccups and a lack of rarities in the lower 48. Also, he's...

    ABA Big Year 2018

I noticed that John W saw the red-flanked bluetail at the Clark Library in Los Angeles, California yesterday, and a few rarities in LRGV Texas the days before, where he bumped into Nicole.
