Barstow, CA; 29 August, Unknown flock overflight

It’s a hard one, and I don’t have anything better to go on. I’m going to leave them unidentified. Thanks for the input though.

Barstow, CA; 29 August, Unknown flock overflight

Probably a long shot here, but this flock overflew us around dusk just outside Barstow, CA on 29 August. I’ll own the fact that photos are terrible, I snapped four with my phone as I saw them go. The last photo is one of the others I cropped. Wing beats were relatively quick. Any hope here...

Pied Billed Grebes? Monterey, CA 16 June 2024

Thank you. That's what I've recorded them as unless someone says something else.

Pied Billed Grebes? Monterey, CA 16 June 2024

These birds were in the background of a picture I took of something else (Violet Green Swallow) so they're out of focus. Are these juvenile Pied Billed Grebes? One looks bigger than the others, and the orange splotch on the bill/cheek doesn't look good for a Pied Billed Grebe. But it does look...

    Red-footed Booby? Monterey, CA 18 November 2023

Thanks to all that looked and commented. I'm leaving this one unidentified. Lesson learned: bring a pair of binoculars!

    Red-footed Booby? Monterey, CA 18 November 2023

It doesn't come through too well in the pictures, but the bill definitely had a bluish tint to it in person. I haven't seen any cormorant species around here that meets that requirement. But my pictures were horrible. So I know where the blame lies!

    Red-footed Booby? Monterey, CA 18 November 2023

No offense taken. I was out with a phone only and the bird was too far.

    Red-footed Booby? Monterey, CA 18 November 2023

Saw this while entertaining family friends, and not equipped for birding, hence the bad phone pictures. There has been a red-footed booby in the area for some time, shape, color, bill color seem about right, and I can't think what else it might be. Thanks for taking a look.

Sharp-shinned or Coopers Hawk; Monterey, CA 03 August 2023

Torn on this bird that was hunting at our feeders this morning: Sharp-shinned or Coopers Hawk. I'm leaning towards Sharp-shinned based on a couple of points: It looks like the terminal band on the tail is thin. Its shins look quite thin (but with nothing to compare against, I know this isn't...

    Allen's Hummingbird; Monterey, CA 17 June 2023

Got a couple of photos of this hummingbird this evening. Pretty confident it's not an Anna's hummingbird - which is what I predominantly see here. Looks like Allen's, but looking at Sibley seems could be Rufous. But looking at range maps Allen's seems more likely.

Loon? Monterey, CA Harbor 11 June 2023

Common Loon is my best guess here, but I'm really uncertain and these pictures aren't great. Any ideas?

American Crow, right? Asilomar Beach, CA 21 May 2023

thanks everyone. I'll keep it as I thought: American Crow.

American Crow, right? Asilomar Beach, CA 21 May 2023

This is an American Crow, right? Every time I convince myself it is, I look at those throat feathers and second guess myself. But they don't seem that shaggy. I think this is a case of me wanting it to be a raven more than it wants to be a raven. Am I correct here?

    Sharp-shinned/Cooper's? Monterey, CA 13 May 2023

Thanks all. Appreciate the help here on the classic sharpie/cooper's question. I'll leave it as it is in eBird - "Sharp-shinned/Cooper's".
