    Moth ID Angle Shades?

This moth was in my kitchen on the morning of 30-1-10. It had been below zero during the night. Can some one confirm the ID as Angle Shades. Is this species seen usually during winter months? Keith

Which is your oldest book about birds?

"British Birds' Nests" subtitled "How, when & where to find & identify them" by R. Kearton published by Cassel in 1895. Two things I like about the book are that it has photographs in it and plenty of them and a variety of local names are given for each species. Keith

    Old Nog

I was walking into a local park this evening (Hilly Fields, Lewisham, London) when I looked up towards the sound of carrion crows - about 20 or so chasing off a heron in the way that they do. Even in London this is a common sight and reminded me of Old Nog the heron in 'Tarka the Otter'. I stood...

The Wasp Who Came For Dinner.

I had a similar experience in a garden shed when I was wondering what the scraping noise was that I was hearing at regular intervals. After some time I investigated and discovered a few wasps scraping away. later I discovered where it was all going too. A nice big nest built in my attic.

    Newt behaviour

Smooth newts will eat small tadpoles but I would doubt that one would have climbed into the dish and eaten the tadpoles. More likely to be a bird I would have thought. I have seen a blackbird eating small frog tadpoles in shallow water this year.

    Can Slow-worms swim?

I've seen them swim but I think that they can't keep it up for too long - probably only do it when they have to.

    Red Admiral today

Saw a red admiral butterfly today flying around on this slightly warmer day in S.E.London. Any other sightings of butterflies this week? Keith

    Tree sparrow advice please

Gillian, there are large numbers of tree sparows nesting each year at Beddington sewage farm and as far as I remember several successful nest boxes. Large numbers of young birds are ringed every year from the nest boxes. I'm not sure who does the ringing now but I'm sure that if you contact...

    Greetings from Sweden

I travel to Sweden every year in connection with my work. However my hosts are amateur ornithologists so I usually get out to see quite a lot of birds but do not have particular species in mind. Highlight this year was probably seeing some Slavonian grebes in full mating plumage & watching...

    Birds Seen From Public Transport

Where do you begin?? Trains and boats are the best for me, travelling to Amsterdam by train earlier this year I was surprised to see Egyptian Goose at a number of locations usually just standing in fields!! The Woolwich Ferry near to where I live is quite good too, only about a 5 minute...

    Local Lane Pics.

I like these pictures Baz, they give me a feeling of actually being there. Nice to see yellowhammers, they are uncommon in the S.E. these days & the only one I have seen in the U.K. this year was in N.Devon. I have a feeling that a flock of fieldfares will turn up in one of your fields soon. keith

    Winter Blackcaps in the garden

For the last few years in my local area (Lewisham) I've noticed more males, seems to be a ratio of about 2:1, but that's a small sample though (3 individuals last year for example) yet to see any this year though. Keith

Behaviour of small birds and sparrowhawk

Thanks for that. I did not really think of it as mobbing while I was watching but of course in a sense it was. Of course as none of these species have young at present it would not be to protect young. None of the small birds were actually flying in or harrassing the bird directly. It was more...
