Gran Canaria and Tenerife, July 2019

Thanks for the kind words Paul. My personal view is that none of the Nanday populations inspire confidence but I guess we'll keep following the national lists; that approach seems to cause the fewest arguments! Cheers Graeme Joynt

Maybe you're right about those populations Paul but for comparative purposes e.g. netfugl and BUBO we've agreed to follow the official national lists of the countries within the Western Pal. There's really no other logical way to do it is there? Once you start trying to make your own decisions...

Gran Canaria and Tenerife, July 2019

SEO is the official body in Spain, including the Canaries. They adjudicate on all rare bird claims and produce the annual Spanish Rarities Report. But it's your own personal list so I guess you can count what you like! Cheers, Graeme Joynt

https://simientedisidente.com/lista-de-las-aves-de-espana-2019/?cn-reloaded=1 Above is a link to the latest official Spanish list, including the Canary Islands. Scroll down about 8 paragraphs or so to the link. No Nanday I'm afraid, though you can now have Red-masked Parakeet on the mainland...

Sorry to spoil the fun but Nanday Parakeet is definitely NOT on Cat C of the Spanish list, which includes the Canaries. A new list was actually released just a few weeks ago. The only country you can count it in is Israel, though I haven't heard of any reports in recent years. Cheers, Graeme Joynt

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=274336&page=3 includes discussion of Black-headed Penduline Tit (page 3 in particular). No definite records, so it would be a first for the WP. Except that, as Brian points out, the white throat surely indicates a hybrid, or at least not a pure...

Western Palearctic Master list with all recorded taxa

Hi Maffong The thread below covers a lot of WP listing matters, including Black-headed Penduline Tit, which should not be on the list. Worth reading the whole thread given your interest in the WP http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=274336 Cheers, Graeme Joynt

Western Palearctic Master list with all recorded taxa

Hi Maffong Variable Wheatear is on the Kuwait list (two recent records). Red-billed Firefinches are apparently common in Djanet in southern Algeria. Cheers, Graeme Joynt

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

Worth noting that Muscovy Duck is now Cat C in Italy (at Lake Orta) and that Yellow-headed Amazon and Swan Goose are countable in southern Germany. Cheers, Graeme Joynt P.S. still no idea how anyone separates lucidus and maroccanus Cormorants. Googling pics doesn't seem to help! Tempting to...

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

Why maroccanus is included within carbo and not lucidus is surely one of the great WP mysteries! Does anyone know how to separate the 2? Cormorants occur all down the coast from Oued Massa (supposedly maroccanus) to the Banc D'arguin (lucidus) and I've never understood why they're regarded as...

Incredible! Hadn't even considered that as a reason for their demise...thanks for the information Pedro. Cheers, Graeme Joynt

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

Hi Pedro I noted with interest earlier in this thread that Black-headed Munia is now extinct in Portugal as a Category C species. I think it was only added to the Portuguese list in 2006 or thereabouts, yet there have been no records since 2011. How can a self sustaining bird last for just 5 or...

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

For those interested in the development and maintenance of the WP list, the following thread is interesting http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=274336 Although it concerns the details of the Italians' attempt to produce a list, I think that one is now out of date, as is the AERC list...
