    Whinchat help

Hi Allison, try Capanagh. It's a Forest Service plantation on the Star Bog Road which runs from Kilwaughter over to Glenarm. Park at the gate entrance at the Kilwaughter end and walk up in from there. No guarantees but saw photos of Whinchat taken there are the weekend. Adam

    Polish Med gull in Antrim

A colour-ringed Med Gull which was photographed at Antrim at the end of July was original ringed as a chick in Poland the previous summer. The movements of these birds is amazing! http://bhgullsni.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/med-gull-red-pnu0.html

    Uncoded Herring Gull ring

You're right, Lowell. The purposed of the whole ringing system is to ensure that people who undertake ringing are suitably competent. I'm sure there would be a ringer nearby who could ring (or even colour-ring) "their" birds for them which would allow them to be monitored.

    Results from colour-ring reading

I've had two colour-ringed Black-headed Gulls reported to me recently, both seen in Belfast last week. One is originally from Germany and the other was ringed on an island off north-east Denmark this summer. Since last winter, I've recorded BHG wintering in Northern Ireland which had...

    Marsh Harrier wing orange tag

It could be a French ringed/tagged bird. Have a look at this scheme which have used orange tags in the past with both symbols and numbers: http://cr-birding.org/node/453

    wing tagged Marsh Harrier

The number on the white tag looks to me as though it might be "48". The right wing-tag looks light green, which would make it a Norfolk bird. Try emailing the photos to Phil Littler at [email protected] and see what he says. ATB.

    Bird calls in movies

I've seen films / TV shows set in Ireland with a night scene in a wood where they've dubbed in Tawny Owl calls - other than one individual bird in a specific location in Co. Down, we don't get Tawny Owls here.

    Northern Ireland Local Patch

Hi Debs, fantastic part of the country to spend a few days. It depends how dedicated a sea-watcher you are, but there are plenty of good places along the North Coast, including Ramore Head by Portrush and Torr Head. The Bann Estuary and Lough Foyle around Myroe would be worth a look, plenty...
