How should I interpret BirdNET results?

Hi, unfortunately confidence on BirdNET can't be interpreted very easily, it merely reflects the closeness of fit based upon the data it has been trained on, not the likelihood that the species has been correctly identified. I've worked with BirdNET in many Spanish habitats and there are some...

Birding around Madrid and guide help

I normally get off the train and walk to the purple area on the map and back, it's about 2km there (so 4km total), and takes 2 hours at a slow birding pace. The whole area is popular with dog walkers and there are trails everywhere, I usually criss-cross the landscape to the north of the main...

Birding around Madrid and guide help

Based on the list of birds you're looking to find and the time frame you have, I would strongly recommend Valdeloshielos. It's 30 minutes by train from the centre (get off at Tres Cantos), and is very consistent for Iberian Magpie. It also has tonnes of Thekla's Lark, Woodlark, Bee Eater...

    Word for Birder in Spanish?

Words related to birdwatching can be a landmine for non-native speakers in Spain... 'Pajareo' is birdwatching, 'pajarero' is a birdwatcher... all very similar to 'pajero' and easily misspoken (although deliberately misspeaking and calling your birdwatching friends wankers is equally common)

Crested or Thekla Lark? (Estapona, Southern Spain)

Difficult bird but looks more like a Crested Lark to me. I think the angle makes the bill look more convex than it actually is. The face pattern and crest look better for Crested. Can you send the other pics, any views of the uppertail or underwing?

European (or adjacent) budget birdwatching options

Hi, this September I’m looking to do a 1-2 week extremely budget trip, my budget would likely be below £700. I would be flying from London. Being from the UK and currently living in Spain, I’ve seen almost all regular Western European birds, but I’ve never birded elsewhere within the WP. I’m...

Somerset UK id black/ dark grey bird please

Heavier looking than a lapwing discounts other white rumped waders. A ringtail Hen Harrier wouldn’t just be described as larger than a blackbird… out of ideas for the moment.

Somerset UK id black/ dark grey bird please

Something like this? In harsh light they can look quite black, if they’re flying away you may not see the white underparts. Wide wings check out, as does the white rump and habitat. ML230921031 - Northern Lapwing - Macaulay Library

Only bird I can think of that would fit that description is Lapwing

    Yala NP, Sri Lanka

It's looking rather long-legged, which is a pro-Greater feature. The bill still looks better for Tibetan, although I don't think it's completely outside variation for Greater. I'm far from certain, it's definitely not Siberian but as to whether it's Greater or Tibetan, perhaps someone else can...

    Sri Lanka bird identification

Hi, the Sand Plover is very difficult from this angle, do you have more pics?

    Yala NP, Sri Lanka

Hi, I'd bet on Tibetan Sand Plover, based on the rather long, non-stubby bill and a lack of dark splotching on the flanks. The wing looks like it's covering quite a lot of the flanks so I'm not 100% sure on that.
