    raptor ID from Crete

Black kite for me too ... In this position, the tail would be more deeply forked, the white spots are quite restricted and the underparts does not show enough rufous for a red kite (although some black can have some confusing rufous) Rgds Guillaume

Anonymous warblers in Suffolk for ID

Hi Deborah I did see the pale color of the back of the legs and feet and wondered a little about Willow Warbler, but neither my memory or my Svensson told me anything about these legs... Thanks for this info, it might be useful to identify one day my first Marsh warbler, quite elusive in center...

Anonymous warblers in Suffolk for ID

Hi everybody Sorry to contradict everybody on the first pic but I do see a dull Chiffchaff here. The first and most important point is the bill, that is short, straight and quite massive instead of a long, curved and thickness-decreasing bill for a Reed Warbler. The general position is wrong...

    Tree Pipit?

Hi everybody, Apart from bill colour,a criteria I never heard before, everything in this bird points to yellowhammer according to my weak jizz and (better reference...) to the Svensson. I mean for the yellowhammer: Plain side of the head as said JanJ, neither streaked nor having well-defined...

    Jaeger in Malaysia

If I remember well what I have read in the past in the french "Ornithos", pic4 is absolutely typical for the upper wing pattern of juv/1stwinter (choose the right one and maybe both). I mean, these two external primaries are only white on the keratin-parts (sorry, lack english term), and the...

    Jaeger in Malaysia

LTS for me too, because of B&W overall colour (no brown at all), barred uppertail, relative length of the tail (as far as I can see), and the shape of the bill, whose terminal black tip's size is the same as the base's size. Regards Guillaume

    Another Gull for ID

I'm afraid you really missed the Franklin's Gull... BHG indeed

Another Bird ID - Washington State

Hi everybody I don't know very much about West coast birds, So I will put a joker for the Gull. I agree for the fourth pic as juv European Starling, but the shape of the two firsts does not fit with this species. The dark short bill combined with the rounded, small head leads to a new world...

ID of a raptor on crete please

Hi everybody I agree with Common Buzzard, and although I don't know about ssp vulpinus criteria, this bird really looks like a Buteo buteo buteo, just a little bit dark. I don't see any criteria showing this bird might be a vulpinus, but if I you have any... Regards Guillaume

    Short-tailed Hawk, light morph?

Hi Chrispie! Be aware of light juvenile broad-winged hawk (as in Sibley's Guide) that is very similar to short-tailed hawk. The two ID criteria are the dark secondaries and, in a lesser extent, the plain brown sides of the neck. You can see a picture I shot in january in the Everglades at this...

    Sea Duck ?

I also vote for Female Pochard. I agree it is quite unusual to see that bird on the sea! Guillaume

    nice wild duck hybrid

Ooops, sorry about the title "wild duck", even though I found it in the wild, I don't think its parents reproduced anywhere but in captivity. I forgot to check HBW before posting... It looks like this hybrid contains indeed Rosybill. Guillaume

    nice wild duck hybrid

Hi everybody! I saw an other duck hybrid this last week, a very beautiful one. The picture was shot in Miribel-Jonage, France, a lake complex famous for its numerous wild duck hybrids. This one is particular and according to its pink bill, the red-crested pochard looks like one of its parents...

    Shelduck hybrid?

Hi Joern and thanks for your interesting post. I unfortunately don't have Gillham books ... (I even didn't know them!) Anyway, i didn't know that T.tadorna x ferruginea hybrids may have the same head pattern as the bird in question. Your picture of the probable mallard*shelduck hybrid fits...
