    Grey Heron takes off

Out of frame some people were walking towards the heron, it was only a matter of time before it took to the air :)

    30D and RAWSHOOTER

The cr2 files have changed from the 20d to the 30d, support for Picture Styles is the most obvious thing. Pixmantec has a beta with 30d support but I've no idea when it's being released.

Good Deal on Canon 30D £829.

    Improving backgrounds

The method I usually use for this kind of editing to as follows: Duplicate the layer Blur the original layer by however much you want Add a mask layer to the copy layer Now paint on the mask layer to remove/reveal parts as necessary On the original layer use the clone tool to remove any obvious...

    Excel hyperlinks to photoshop

It's MS not following their own rules (again). I'm trying to find a fix for this... watch this space... Ok. It seems that it's a "design feature" of excel and the only real solution is to run office setup and remove MS Photo Editor - then excel will using the proper file association as you...

    Mallards in the mist

I'll add a vote for leaving it as it is. It has a wonderful delicate feel to it.

Recommendation for great free editing software

Picassa has one major failing - there's no option to reduce the brightness of an image.

    what do you think

I like it but perhaps some tweaks in post would make it pop a bit more. Hope you don't mind but I had a quick play in Paint Shop Pro X and did the following: Histogram Adj. to increase contrast a bit. Increased saturation Removed some of the noise Sharpened it up some

    Best lens for Dragonflies ?

I'll add another vote for the Sigma 70-300 DG Macro. Superb quality lens for the price and 1:2 macro as well. Combined with a set of tubes this is about the only lens I use for dragons and other bugs. Attached were taken with it on my 300D this year.

    Monitor issues

I would say the picture looks dark, checking the RGB values the whites are around 180,180,180. Matching the monitor to a print is a good idea. Find a colour chart and make a print using your normal method - either your own printer or from a lab. Then you need to check the display properties for...

    Extension Tube Advice

I have the kenko tubes, they keep the full electronic signal between camera and lens although autofocus is of limited use for macro work. They won't accept an EFS lens without modification tho. Jessops also do a set for around the same price.

    Help required - focus problem

Hi, It looks like the problem could be that you were focussed at infinity. The difference between say 40ft and infinity on most lenses is very small and makes getting perfect focus tricky. Another stop or two of aperture would have probably made a big difference and with IS on shooting at...

    Teleconvertor Question

Hi Scott, I would be tempted to say the 2X is better on the basis that you can always zoom out if need be - better to reach too far than not far enough! If possible ask your camera shop if you can take a couple of shots with the TC's hooked up to your 100-300mm so you can look at the results...

How did I mess this up?

Not that difficult. Apart from the better sharpening and film type emulation and other tools, the fact that the controls are interactive makes a huge difference when tweaking the values. Then add all batch processing tools and its a no brainer.
