    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2025

I'm finally off the mark for the year thanks to a visit to Ravensroost Wood. A male Broad-bodied Chaser was my first of the year, at the meadow pond, followed by lots of Large Red Damsel also at the pond and a fair few immature Common Blue alongside the main path in the ancient woodland. Then...

    Phylogeny of birds

These won't be new issues because they'll all have been raised by one or other of the studies that were fed into this, but that's going to keep the taxonomists busy for a while.

    American Ornithologists Union

I still can't believe they missed the opportunity to call it American Common Gull, which would have forced us to call our version the Common Common Gull.

Trump administration revokes ALL environmental legislations

It's dangerous to read too much detail into things issued by the current administration, but it's worth noting that this doesn't pretend to actually revoke the legislation - it's asking authorities to withdraw regulations and guidance where the legislation allows them to do that. Will it be...

Anybody had been to Heard and McDonald islands?

Following some digging around on a relevant Australian website, it seems landings aren't actually forbidden, just very difficult and prone to be abandoned due to the weather. The tone of several pages on the website is that they're steering people towards sailing through the islands' territorial...

Anybody had been to Heard and McDonald islands?

According to news sources that were reporting mainly to laugh at the US government, the islands go multiple years with no-one landing at all, not even researchers. However the bird in question has been reported by someone for the Name A Bird You've Seen game on here, while on an oceanographic...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

It's the only species from the IOC version of the list of albatrosses that no-one's claimed for the Name A Bird You've Seen game.

Increasing dissent amongst birders regards taxonomic changes and seeking an alternative listing authority?

This comment from the letter is worrying me, because there are lots of half and half categories in any list, whatever the taxonomy. When birders get together to whinge about "the authorities" and the terrible evils being done to our personal lists, we are mainly talking about the people with the...

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

Here are the last few species again, with the numbering corrected: 9818 Slaty Gnateater 9819 Northern Sooty Woodpecker 9820 Bundok Flycatcher 9821 Damar Flycatcher 9822 Fly River Grassbird

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

Apologies - you've uncovered an error in the Reverse List. When Will played the original unsplit species he must have been playing Crimson-naped because that's on his life list on Bubo and Necklaced isn't. So you can have Necklaced if you've seen that but Crimson-naped wasn't available.

    Name a Bird You've Seen 2

When a species is split after it's been played we have to make a decision as to which of the two new ones has been played and which is available. In this case, for reasons I don't recall, I thought that Burmese had been played and Vinous-breasted was still available. However I've just checked...

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Nothing's really certain until either the IOC announce a lump (in which case the British List will adopt the change at its next update but most birders will adopt the change immediately) or whichever non-IOC authority currently lumps the species announces a split, in which case the British list...
