Identification
12–13 cm (4¾-5 in)
- Dark slate-grey face, crown and upperparts
- Black breastband
Similar Species
Very like Rwenzori Apalis except for being noticably larger, all white chin and throat, broader breast band, no rufous on lower breast and deeper colouring on the flanks.
Distribution
Africa
Western Africa: Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo
Eastern Africa: South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi
Taxonomy
Used to be placed in genus Apalis.
Has been considered conspecific with Rwenzori Apalis in the past.
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- O. p. pulcher:
- Southeastern Nigeria and Cameroon; southern South Sudan, highlands of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, southeastern Uganda, and Kenya
- O. p. murphyi:
- Extreme eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (Marungu Plateau)
Habitat
Found low down in dense undergrowth in lowland forest.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists of insects and invertebrates, such as caterpillars, grasshoppers and mantids.
Vocalisation
Very like Rwenzori Apalis.
