Identification

15·5–16 cm (6-6¼ in)
Male

  • Black head, neck and upper chest
  • Upper back yellow with cinnamon tint
  • Yellow back
  • Blackish upper tail coverts
  • Under chest yellow with cinnamon tint
  • Yellow abdomen and flanks
  • Whitish under tail coverts
  • Black wings and tail, feathers bordered with light grey to whitish
  • Horn coloured bill

Female

  • Grey head and neck striped with black
  • Black cheek and throat
  • Upper back olive brown to olive back
  • Yellow chest with orange tone
  • Whitish abdomen and under tail coverts

Distribution

South America: found in Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina

Taxonomy

The Peruvian Sierra-Finch has been split from this species.

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Moist montanes and high-altitude shrubland, rocky areas usually near water and between 3,500 and 4,500 m.

Behaviour

Diet

They usually forage on the ground. Their main diet consists of seeds and invertebrates. They will also take waste food from around human habitations.

Breeding

The cup nest is built from dry grass, lined with grass, wool or horsehair, hidden amongst tall grass or dense shrub. The eggs are light bluish green with brownish or purple spots.
