Identification
11 cm (4¼ in)
Male
- Turquoise-blue
- Black: throat patch, short eye-stripe and upper mantle
- Wings mainly black but have broad blue fringes to greater coverts and tertials
- Blackish tail
- Red iris
- Dusky legs
Female
- Browny-olive above
- Greeny-blue on forecrown, cheeks, scapulars and rump
- Dull buffish below.
Distribution
South America: found in south-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais to Santa Catarina).
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and montanes, to 1,700 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of insects and small fruits; also nectar, berries and seeds.
