Identification

- Dull black
- Whitish patch on outer webs of primaries
- Black bill with yellow patch at base of maxilla
- Yellowish-brown iris
- Black legs and feet
- Long decurved bill, longer in male
Sexes similar.
Distribution
The black mamo was only found on Molokai, Hawaii. After its discovery in 1893 it was last seen in 1907.
It became extinct very early in the 20th century.

Habitat
Wet forests above 1525 m.
Behaviour
Black mamo were approachable birds of the understory, and very aggressively displaced all other species except 'o'o from choice flowers.
Diet
The diet included nectar.
Vocalisation
They were also known as Hoa, in imitation of their call, or as 'O'o Nuku Umu.
