24 cm (9½ in) Male

Black face and throat
Greenish-blue crown, neck, breast and uppertail
Red belly
Black, finely vermiculated wings
Pale grey-horn to yellow bill
Yellow eyering

Female

Red belly
White chest
Grey breast
Black upper mandible, grey below
Broken white eye ring
Wings barred white black
White edged and black notched undertail

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.

There are 3 subspecies^[1]:

T. c. peruvianus:

South-central Colombia to Ecuador, Peru and eastern Brazil

T. c. curucui:

Humid eastern Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia

T. c. behni:

Eastern Bolivia to southern Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina

Two additional subspecies bolivianus and variegatus are not recognised by all authorities^[2].

Habitat

Found in a wide variety of habitats from forest to scrub.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes insects and small fruit.
