Identification

- Turquoise wings and tail
- Blue throat, cheeks and undertail coverts
- Yellow underparts
- Pink bare skin at base of bill
- Large black bill
- Yellow iris (brown in juvenile)
Similar species
Blue-and-yellow Macaw is similar and the two species often occur in mixed flocks. Blue-and-yellow Macaw is larger, has more white in face and black chin, and the upperwing is two-toned.
Distribution
Northern Bolivia (Llanos de Moxos, Beni)
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Palm forest and gallery forests with palms.
Behaviour
Usually in pairs during summer, and in flocks during winter.
Breeding
It nests in tree holes.
Feeding
The diet includes fruit, insects and larvae.
Vocalizations
The sounds given by flying birds are similar to those given by Blue-and-yellow Macaw but higher pitched.
