Identification
20–23 cm (7¾-9 in)
- Green upperparts
- Metallic blue green crown
- Black chin
- Green throat and chest
- Rufous underparts and undertail
- Black bill
Female: similar with ochre underparts
Variations
Some individuals in the southeast may show white chin.
Similar Species
Almost identical to White-chinned Jacamar which has dull grayish crown. No known overlap in range.
Distribution
South America: found in riverine forests of eastern Peru to northern Bolivia and western Amazonian Brazil.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Cloud forest, forest edges and secondary growth often near water.
Behaviour
Diet
There is not a lot of information available, but thought to be similar to that of Rufous-tailed Jacamar, i.e. flying insects.
Breeding
The only known nest was a tunnel in a stream embankment.
Vocalisation
Has been described as a series of high-pitched notes; full song an excited series of accelerating mewing whistles.
Movements
Sedentary.
