- Red overall plumage
- Black wings
- Shiny white area at the base of the lower mandible
Distribution
Both subspecies are found in eastern Brazil.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Two subspecies are recognized[1]:
- R. b. bresilius:
- North-eastern Brazil (Paraíba to Bahia)
- R. b. dorsalis:
- South-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo to Santa Catarina)
Habitat
Atlantic rainforest, woodland and gardens near water.
Behaviour
Usually alone or in loose family groups.
Diet
Omnivorous; however their main diet consists of pulpy fruit.
Breeding
They place their nest in a low tree or bush. It is an open woven cup constructed from grass, vines and other fibres.
Vocalisation
Call: a constant, spaced jep or jip.
