Identification
14-15 cm
- Rufous with a tawny quality on the upperside
- Underside paler on breast becoming buff-and-white on rear belly and undertail coverts
- Eye dark brown
- Eye ring pale
- Bill dark but with buffy base of lower mandible
- Legs dark
Distribution
Northern Peru: (Andes of Piura, Cajamarca, and Lambayeque west of the Río Huancabamba and the upper Río Marañón).
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
This species and 15 others were previously included in a complex of Rufous Antpitta/Chestnut Antpitta.
Habitat
Presumably similar to other members of the complex, it should be sought after in areas with dense understory of forest, second growth etc. Found at elevations of 2850–3400 m asl.
Behaviour
Presumably similar to other members of the Rufous Antpitta/Chestnut Antpitta complex.
Vocalisation
Long song is a trill of almost about 20 notes given within 2.5 seconds, accelerating and increasing in pitch at the end. Each note is complex but down-slurred. Short song consists of 5-6 notes given at a relatively slow pace. This is described as having a chiming quality.
