Identification

• Olive brown back
• Pale tipped tail
• Yellow underparts
• Grey head
• Pale lemon throat
• Dark eye stripe
• Black legs and feet
• Straight black bill
  

Male has an orange crest which is usually concealed

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.

Taxonomy

The scientific name has been spelled rixosus in the past.

Subspecies^[1]

There are 3 subspecies.

• M. r. flavigularis:

• Caribbean coast of northern Colombia and northern Venezuela

• M. r. obscurodorsalis:

• Llanos of eastern Colombia and south-western Venezuela

• M. r. rixosa:

• Interior eastern Brazil to eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina

Habitat

Pastures.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes insects found on, and disturbed by, mammals.
